On 10 December, the Human Rights Day, we remember that the right to peace is a prerequisite for the enjoyment of all universally recognized human rights. The International Day of Peace presents an annual occasion for the international community to recall the value of peace. However, given the vague character of the term, it is essential to understand how international law looks at peace. 23 August is commemorated each year in memory of the beginning of the revolt of slaves in Santo Domingo, today’s Dominican Republic. The uprising played a crucial role in the abolition of the transatlantic slave trade. Despite the abolishment of slavery and the establishment of slavery as a human rights violation and an international crime, modern slavery is perpetuated in the present society. Learn more in our video. 30 July marks the World Day against Trafficking in Persons. Human trafficking is a serious transnational crime and a human rights violation. It is thought to be one of the fastest-growing profitable activities of transnational criminal organisations. Human trafficking is defined in the Protocol to Prevent, Suppress and Punish Trafficking in Persons which supplements the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime. Despite the numbers of victims estimated in millions, the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court does not include a distinct crime of human trafficking. Learn more in our video.
